Terry Tallis – extracts from my Diary of 1966
1966 March 18th – Keith H.; Dick B.; and Dave H.; with their dog teams left for Snowshoe glacier to pick up East Coast depots being left by the Biscoe for east coast work. Moved the new Esse solid-fuel stove that had arrived by relief ship into the living room. The old stove went into the bathroom.
1966 March 22/23rd – Biscoe depots 150 boxes of dog food and 37 man rations at the foot Snowshoe Glacier. The rest of the East Coast depot laying teams left base.
Keith & Co delayed by bad weather and just reached top of Amphitheatre.
Neil, Ian and Alec meet up with them at the bottom of Sodabread.
Work started on installing the Esse stove.
1966 May 6th – Returned from 4 weeks depot laying.
“ Thank goodness the wind has dropped. Stella died during the night.
Broke camp and got away as soon as possible as the weather was not good. Ran into deep soft snow at Walton Peak that continued until we reached base.
John had cooked an excellent meal for us.
The livingroom and fireplace is excellent and nearly finished. John and Tom have put a lot of work into it and it certainly made a difference.
Dick and the rest of the lads have been busy making curtains etc…..”
The Full and Accurate Story of the John and Tom’s deaths later in May 1966 is told HERE
